Dubai – Professor Abbas El Gamal, a distinguished Egyptian engineer affiliated with Stanford University, has been recognized with the Great Arab Minds 2025 Award in the Engineering and Technology category. This accolade, announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, underscores El Gamal's remarkable contributions to cutting-edge digital communication and technology.

This award aims to celebrate Arab innovators whose significant contributions are vital for regional development and global scientific progress. Sheikh Mohammed highlighted the need to foster Arab talent in innovation, noting that the awardees exemplify the Arab world's potential to create, lead, and inspire in the realms of science and technology.

As the Hitachi America Professor at Stanford University’s School of Engineering, El Gamal is acknowledged as a pioneer in network information theory, which has laid the groundwork for current digital communication systems. His research has not only set the mathematical boundaries for communication networks but has significantly impacted communication protocols globally. He was also instrumental in advancing technologies like Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and CMOS image sensors, integral to smartphones, digital cameras, and next-gen computing systems.

Throughout his career, Professor El Gamal has authored over 230 scientific papers and has penned influential texts such as Network Information Theory, widely regarded as essential reading for engineering scholars. His impact stretches beyond academia; he holds 35 patents and has taken on leadership roles in numerous tech startups, particularly in semiconductors and biotechnology.

El Gamal hails from Egypt, where he received his bachelor’s from Cairo University before earning a master’s and PhD in electrical engineering from Stanford. He has led Stanford's Information Systems Laboratory and served as chair of the Electrical Engineering Department, mentoring countless engineers and researchers.

The Great Arab Minds Award, established by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is dedicated to recognizing outstanding accomplishments across various categories, including Engineering and Technology, Medicine, Economics, Natural Sciences, Literature and Arts, and Architecture and Design. Minister Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi emphasized the award's role in highlighting Arab innovators as catalysts for progress and inspiration for future generations.

Now in its third iteration, this initiative continues to showcase Arab talent while aiming to reverse the trend of brain drain by offering innovators recognition and a platform to ignite global change.

El Gamal's accolade illustrates the increasing impact of the Arab world in the fields of science and technology, affirming that local talent can lead on a global scale in innovation, research, and groundbreaking solutions.
