In Abu Dhabi, a crucial policy dialogue led by Frontier25 and the Global Methane Hub aimed at tackling methane emissions and addressing climate change was convened. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, CEO of Frontier25, assembled key policymakers, regulatory authorities, and industry leaders for this meeting.
The conference centered on initial findings and recommendations from a cooperative research initiative designed to enhance efforts in methane reduction across various crucial sectors.
While addressing the audience, Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan underscored the importance of safeguarding Earth’s atmosphere and maintaining its natural equilibrium.
She remarked, “The air we breathe is often taken for granted, yet it represents a critical balance that distinguishes our planet. The precise interactions of oxygen, carbon, and nitrogen enable the continuity of life as we know it.”
Furthermore, she noted, “Our growing industrial activity over the last two centuries has contributed to rising temperatures, disturbing these balances, which adversely affects our climate, environment, and health.”
While the beneficial impacts of methane reduction on the climate and economy are widely recognized, its influence on air quality and public health has not been sufficiently highlighted, according to Frontier25.
The organization has engaged in international comparisons, examined the UAE’s policy framework, and consulted various stakeholders to develop actionable policy recommendations aimed at enhancing methane reduction initiatives.
This dialogue provided a platform for senior leaders to assess these recommendations and offer feedback ahead of the final report's release.
Research highlighted during the meeting revealed that methane contributes approximately 30% of the warming experienced globally since the Industrial Revolution. Notably, methane possesses a warming potential around 80 times that of carbon dioxide over a 20-year span.
Efforts to rapidly reduce methane emissions this decade could help avert nearly 0.3°C of global warming by the 2040s.
Besides its climatic advantages, cutting methane emissions could lead to the prevention of 26 million tons in agricultural losses, avert 255,000 premature fatalities, and decrease 775,000 hospitalizations due to asthma.
The session revealed that the majority of methane emissions stem from three sectors: fossil fuels, agriculture, and waste.
Participants examined methods to enhance methane initiatives through improved policies and collaborative efforts among governments, regulators, and the industry.
Frontier25 announced that the comprehensive report will be released in the third quarter of 2026, featuring insights and recommendations derived from the research and the conversations held during the Abu Dhabi dialogue.
