Abu Dhabi Enhances Global Life Sciences Collaborations During US Visit

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Abu Dhabi has marked a significant milestone in establishing itself as a leader in the global intelligent life sciences arena by signing 22 strategic agreements during its latest mission to the United States. The mission, spearheaded by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), aimed to reinforce global connections in genomics, artificial intelligence (AI), biotechnology, precision medicine, and advanced healthcare innovation.

The delegation journeyed through major cities like San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles, involving over 40 senior officials from 16 governmental agencies, healthcare organizations, and industry stakeholders. Throughout the mission, they engaged in over 30 strategic meetings and conducted 15 visits to prominent international healthcare and life sciences organizations.

Building a Cohesive Life Sciences Ecosystem

Abu Dhabi is shaping one of the most integrated intelligent life sciences ecosystems worldwide, merging genomics, AI, advanced research infrastructure, real-world evidence, clinical applications, and flexible regulatory frameworks into a cohesive unit.

This innovative model aims to expedite the transition from scientific breakthroughs to practical healthcare applications, thereby enhancing patient outcomes and solidifying Abu Dhabi's status as a global hub for life sciences advancement.

The Role of Global Partnerships

Her Excellency Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, emphasized that the future of life sciences hinges not only on scientific breakthroughs but also on the ability to swiftly translate these discoveries into improved quality of life.

Dr. Al Ghaithi remarked that Abu Dhabi has curated a connected ecosystem where genomics, AI, clinical research, healthcare delivery, and governance coexist to assist innovators in developing, testing, and scaling transformative technologies.

She highlighted that the recent mission to the United States illustrates the significance of international alliances in promoting healthcare innovation, reinforcing Abu Dhabi's role as a dynamic platform for intelligent life sciences, while creating new avenues for better health outcomes in the UAE and globally.

Precision Medicine Partnerships

In line with its precision medicine initiative, DoH has secured collaborations with Boehringer Ingelheim, Novartis, and Eli Lilly.

These partnerships aim to investigate the genetic factors of diseases, enhance AI-powered genomics capabilities, and facilitate innovative treatments for obesity and Alzheimer’s disease.

The agreements endorse Abu Dhabi's goal of harnessing genomics, AI, and clinical knowledge to transition healthcare from reactive to proactive, personal care.

Strengthening AI and Biotechnology Initiatives

Abu Dhabi has also unveiled initiatives aimed at broadening its AI-driven life sciences framework.

M42 has partnered with Abu Dhabi Biobank and BioTwin to implement Virtual Human Twin technology in the UAE. This technology is anticipated to elevate healthcare research and innovation.

Additionally, Masdar City, M42, and Attentive Science have inaugurated Biosphere Labs to provide advanced laboratory facilities that foster biotechnology research, innovation, and commercialization.

Moreover, Hub71-supported startup BioSapien has reached Phase 1 clinical trials, showcasing Abu Dhabi's capability to nurture biotechnology firms from initial innovation to clinical advancement.

Advancements in Local Biomanufacturing

The mission further solidified Abu Dhabi's expertise in advanced biomanufacturing and biologic treatments.

Mubadala Bio entered into a strategic agreement with Biosidus to enhance local production of biologic therapies, targeting regional healthcare resilience while improving access to cutting-edge treatments through domestic manufacturing.

Creation of Life Sciences Corridor

To promote greater international collaboration, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi has allied with Biocom California to develop a strategic life sciences corridor connecting Abu Dhabi and California.

This initiative is poised to generate new research collaboration, investment opportunities, innovation, and commercialization between two thriving life sciences environments.

Establishment of the Region's First Eye Bank

A key highlight of the mission was a groundbreaking collaboration between Abu Dhabi Biobank and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute to establish the Middle East's premier Eye Bank in Abu Dhabi.

This initiative aims to enhance regional transplantation services, reduce reliance on imported donor tissues, and create a center of excellence for ophthalmic research, education, and restorative care.

HELM Cluster Fostering Innovation

Abu Dhabi's life sciences framework is supported by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office's Health, Endurance, Longevity, and Medicine (HELM) Cluster.

This cluster synergizes research, investment, commercialization, and healthcare implementation within a unified setting. It unites researchers, innovators, investors, and healthcare providers to advance scientific discoveries into applicable healthcare solutions.

Focus of Discussions on Future Healthcare Technologies

During the mission, the delegation engaged with US governmental bodies, academic research institutions, biotechnology enterprises, and industry leaders.

Topics of discussion included collaborations in AI-driven drug discovery, gene editing, gene therapies for rare and inherited disorders, healthy longevity, and progressive therapeutics.

The delegation showcased a broad spectrum of Abu Dhabi's healthcare and innovation ecosystem, involving the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Investment Office, M42, Hub71, New York University Abu Dhabi, Masdar City, Khalifa University, KEZAD, PureHealth, Mubadala Bio, Arcera, and the Institute for Healthier Living Abu Dhabi.
