On April 25, the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) observed World Veterinary Day 2026 with the theme “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health.” This event underscores the pivotal contributions of veterinary professionals in safeguarding public and animal health.
In collaboration with veterinarians, technicians, livestock breeders, and the broader community, the Authority is committed to delivering high-standard veterinary services that uphold animal health and food safety.
ADAFSA's veterinary teams are tirelessly providing medical assistance and executing field programs that educate breeders on livestock management amid changing weather patterns. The goal is to enhance disease prevention and elevate animal welfare throughout the emirate.
Continuing its efforts, ADAFSA is currently running its 16th Annual Animal Disease and Vaccination Awareness Campaign (2025–2026), which is set to conclude at the end of April. The campaign aims to vaccinate approximately 2.4 million sheep, goats, and cattle within Abu Dhabi's total livestock population exceeding 3.25 million.
This vaccination initiative targets key diseases such as Peste des Petits Ruminants, Foot and Mouth Disease, and Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia. Expert field teams are coordinating their efforts with livestock breeders across the region.
In addition to vaccinations, ADAFSA is implementing comprehensive awareness campaigns to advocate for biosecurity measures. Livestock owners are encouraged to keep newly purchased or ill animals separate, report any unusual symptoms or deaths via the toll-free number 800555, and maintain cleanliness by regularly sanitizing animal enclosures and equipment.
The Authority also emphasized the necessity of sourcing animals and feed exclusively from licensed vendors and adhering to proper disposal methods for waste. Guidance has been provided to mitigate zoonotic disease transmission, including instructing farmworkers to maintain hygienic practices and to avoid performing slaughter in non-approved locations.
ADAFSA highlighted the evolving role of veterinarians, who are now integral to the “One Health” initiative, which links the health of humans, animals, and the environment.
Furthermore, the Authority remains committed to enhancing veterinary expertise through training initiatives, scientific research, and high-tech laboratories focused on camel diseases and coronaviruses.
ADAFSA urged the community to acknowledge the significant work of veterinary professionals and encouraged students to explore veterinary careers, which are becoming increasingly crucial for food security and sustainable progress.
