An unfortunate SUV incident in Agra led to the loss of five lives and injuries to two others on Friday evening, sending shockwaves through the community and prompting discussions about road safety. The collision took place around 8:30 pm in the Nagla Budhi locality as a speeding SUV, reportedly travelling at excessive speeds, barreled into a group of pedestrians gathered by the roadside.
Police reports indicate that the SUV hit seven individuals before crashing into a central divider and overturning. The violent impact left the vehicle severely damaged and resulted in multiple fatalities. Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of chaos, with bystanders rushing to assist those trapped beneath the wreckage and alerting emergency services.
The driver, Anshu Gupta, 34, from Dayalbagh in Agra, was quickly apprehended by locals after the accident and handed over to the police. He remains in custody as investigations seek to uncover the specific causes of the crash, particularly focusing on potential negligence or speeding.
Among the deceased are four men and one woman, all of whom were declared dead either on the spot or shortly after being taken to the hospital. The two injured victims were transported urgently to local hospitals for immediate care. Police have already contacted the families of those affected, and the bodies have been dispatched for post-mortem examinations.
Eyewitness accounts paint a harrowing picture of the tragedy. Pintu, the brother of one victim named Babli, remarked, “A Thar-like SUV sped towards us and ran over everyone. Many, including my sister, died on the spot. The horror of that scene is forever etched in our memories.”
Authorities have confiscated the SUV and are examining CCTV footage from surrounding shops and residences to piece together the events leading up to the crash. In the wake of the incident, police presence in the area has been escalated to maintain order and facilitate the ongoing investigation.
This incident has reignited conversations about road safety in Agra, especially regarding the need for stricter regulations on speeding and ensuring pedestrian safety. Local residents are urging authorities to implement tougher enforcement and educational initiatives to avert such future tragedies.
Senior police officials confirmed that Anshu Gupta will face relevant legal charges under the Indian Penal Code. They have assured the public that a thorough examination is underway to ascertain the causes behind this devastating accident.
The heartbreaking SUV crash in Agra serves as a solemn reminder of the hazards associated with reckless driving and the pressing need for heightened awareness and preventive strategies on urban roads. The bereaved families are left to mourn their losses as the city confronts one of its most tragic road incidents in recent times.
