A Chinese startup based in Hangzhou has captured worldwide attention after unveiling an AI-powered device that claims to translate pet sounds and behaviour into human speech. The company, PettiChat, says its wearable gadget can analyze barks, meows and body language to help pet owners better understand their animals.
The device works through Alibaba Cloud’s Qwen artificial intelligence model and is designed to attach directly to a pet’s collar. According to the company, the lightweight wearable uses microphones, motion sensors and behavioral analysis technology to interpret emotional signals from pets in real time. The startup claims the AI can generate human-like phrases within 1.2 seconds.
PettiChat says the system has been trained using millions of pet sound samples and more than one million pieces of behavioral data. The company claims the technology can recognize emotions such as excitement, loneliness, irritation and affection. In demonstration videos, translated phrases include expressions like “Play with me,” “Leave me alone,” and “I don’t like this.”
The startup says the goal of the device is not only entertainment but also helping owners better understand their pets’ emotional needs. The company believes AI-powered communication tools could improve relationships between humans and animals, especially for busy pet owners who spend long hours away from home.
Despite the excitement surrounding the launch, the product has also triggered skepticism online. Many viewers questioned whether the demonstrations were genuine, suggesting the translated voices may have been added later through video editing. Critics argue that the responses shown in promotional videos appear too accurate and human-like to fully trust.
Technology experts have also warned that interpreting animal emotions through artificial intelligence remains a highly complex scientific challenge. While AI can identify certain vocal patterns and behavioral signals, many researchers believe current technology still cannot fully understand what animals are truly trying to communicate.
The wearable device currently comes in three colors including brown, pink and silver and is designed for both cats and dogs. PettiChat opened global pre-orders earlier this month and claims it has already received around 10,000 reservations from customers worldwide. The limited-edition product is being sold online for approximately $149.99 after an initial launch price of $189.99.
The growing popularity of AI-driven consumer gadgets highlights how artificial intelligence is rapidly expanding into everyday life. Whether PettiChat becomes a breakthrough innovation or simply another viral tech trend, the product has already sparked a global debate about the future of communication between humans and animals.
