On June 22, an Air India flight, AI479, en route from Delhi to Amritsar, momentarily entered Pakistani airspace while executing a go-around procedure, as confirmed by the airline.
The incident occurred near Amritsar, a region situated close to the India-Pakistan border.
According to Air India, the crew reported a "marginal infringement" into Pakistani airspace during the go-around, which is a common aviation practice used when a landing is aborted and the aircraft ascends for another approach.
Initial reports suggest that Air Traffic Control (ATC) had instructed the flight to maintain a hold over 13 DME (Distance Measuring Equipment). However, the aircraft continued towards Amritsar, made a left turn, and briefly crossed the international border.
After the brief incursion, the aircraft returned to its designated flight path and landed safely at Amritsar airport.
Air India stated that the crew operating flight AI479 on June 22 did marginally enter Pakistani airspace while maneuvering during the approach.
The incident has been reported to relevant regulatory bodies and is under internal review.
Air India reiterated, "The safety of passengers and crew is our utmost priority. The incident has been shared with regulatory authorities and is being internally investigated."
Further details about the circumstances leading to the airspace breach have not been disclosed by the airline.
Aviation regulators have initiated a standard inquiry to determine the events leading to this airspace violation during the maneuver.
The flight landed in Amritsar at approximately 2:20 AM on Tuesday, nearly four hours later than its scheduled time.
A go-around is a procedural maneuver in aviation, where pilots abort landing attempts and gain altitude to retry the approach.
Such maneuvers may be necessary due to factors like poor visibility, adverse weather, runway occupancy, conflicts in air traffic, or an unstable landing approach. Regulators and airlines view go-arounds as essential safety measures for secure landings.
During these maneuvers, aircraft may temporarily deviate from their anticipated flight paths, particularly near international borders.
This incident comes a month after a Pakistan International Airlines flight briefly entered Indian airspace due to adverse weather before Indian air traffic controllers redirected it.
It's worth noting that restrictions on Indian aircraft using Pakistani airspace remain in place following a ban extended by Pakistan in May.
On June 22, Air India flight AI479 experienced a brief incursion into Pakistani airspace while conducting a go-around maneuver near Amritsar airport.
Preliminary details indicate that after directions from Air Traffic Control (ATC) to maintain a hold over 13 DME, the flight inadvertently proceeded towards Amritsar and crossed the international border during a left turn.
This occurrence transpired in proximity to Amritsar airport, located near the India-Pakistan border.
The airspace breach took place on June 22 during the approach of Air India flight AI479 from Delhi to Amritsar.
A go-around is an accepted aviation procedure where pilots discontinue landing attempts and climb for another approach.
Indeed. Air India has notified regulatory authorities about the incident and launched an internal investigation. Aviation regulators are conducting a standard inquiry as well.
