Airlines across the world are facing growing pressure as jet fuel prices surge and supplies tighten due to disruptions linked to the Iran conflict. Industry leaders have warned that the situation could lead to flight reductions and possible aircraft groundings.
Major carriers including Qantas Airways, Lufthansa, and Virgin Atlantic have flagged rising operational challenges. Increased fuel costs have forced airlines to adjust fares, introduce surcharges, and review route networks.
Airlines have reported that jet fuel prices have more than doubled since the conflict began, significantly increasing operating costs. Fuel typically accounts for a major portion of airline expenses, making the current situation difficult for many carriers.
Lufthansa officials stated that while planes have not yet been grounded, shortages in fuel supply at certain airports, particularly in Asia, could make such actions necessary. Some airlines are already preparing contingency plans to manage the crisis.
In response to rising costs, several airlines are cutting capacity, delaying investments, and adjusting staffing. Reports suggest that some carriers have even begun reducing workforce hours or planning temporary furloughs.
The disruption of key global routes and reduced supply through critical energy transit points has further complicated the situation. Analysts warn that recovery may take time, even if geopolitical tensions ease.
Industry groups have called for government support measures, including policy adjustments and coordinated fuel purchasing strategies. Airlines continue to monitor the situation closely as uncertainty remains high.
