On October 23, 2025, Alaska Airlines encountered a major hindrance when a severe IT outage led to the cancellation of all its flights across the nation, including those run by regional partner Horizon Air. The disruption commenced in the afternoon due to an unforeseen failure at the airline's main data center, which prompted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to impose a mandatory ground stop around 7:00 PM Pacific Time as a precaution for flight safety while technicians resolved the issue.
The repercussions were severe, resulting in over 229 canceled flights and numerous delays. Alaska Airlines recommended that passengers verify their flight status before heading to the airports due to ongoing disruptions while efforts were underway to realign aircraft and crews across the network. In contrast, Hawaiian Airlines, a sister airline under the Alaska Air Group, continued operations without incident.
Alaska Airlines was swift to clarify that the outage was not linked to any cybersecurity threats and assured that flight safety remained uncompromised. This incident marks the second significant IT failure for the airline in 2025, following a similar scenario in July that halted operations for approximately three hours due to hardware issues.
Frustrated passengers voiced their concerns on social media, reporting lengthy hold times and criticizing the airline's handling of ongoing technical difficulties in recent months. The airline acknowledged the disruptions and pledged to expedite the restoration of normal operations, highlighting adaptable travel policies to aid those impacted.
This IT incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by the airline sector, where reliance on technology means disruptions can trigger extensive consequences. Alaska Airlines remains committed to ensuring safe and efficient travel while tackling these technological challenges to minimize future incidents.
