Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will bring together experts, union leaders, and business people in Canberra later this year to share ideas on how to grow Australia’s economy. This special meeting, known as a roundtable, will take place in August. The main goal is to plan strong steps for improving the country’s future, especially in areas like jobs, housing, and technology.
Mr. Albanese shared this news during a speech at the National Press Club. He said the meeting will focus on how to make Australia more productive and prepare for smart economic changes. The Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, will lead this effort.
“Our government has the support of the people, and now it’s time to act,” Mr. Albanese said. “We want to have clear discussions and take real action that helps everyone.”
This plan is similar to the Jobs and Skills Summit that the government held during its first term. That earlier event helped shape new workplace rules. Now, the Prime Minister hopes this new round table will lead to long-lasting changes that most Australians agree on.
“Change that is forced by government alone doesn’t last. Real change must be understood and accepted by the people,” he explained.
What Might Change?
Many experts have shared ideas to help Australia’s economy grow. These include fixing the tax system, improving social services, and cutting unnecessary rules. While Mr. Albanese didn’t name exact changes yet, he said the meeting will look at key issues like:
He added, “Sometimes, government needs to step in and make things better. We can’t solve every problem by doing less. Now is the time to step up and make smart choices.”
Promises to the People
Mr. Albanese also spoke about his government’s promises. For example:
Changes in Government Jobs
The Prime Minister also shared some big changes in top government jobs. Steven Kennedy, who has worked for many years as the head of the Treasury, will now lead the Prime Minister’s department. Jenny Wilkinson, who leads the Department of Finance, will take Mr. Kennedy’s place. She will be the first woman to ever hold this important job.
Mr. Albanese said, “We believe in the hard work of our public service. These leaders will do great work for Australia.”
Defence Spending Debate
Mr. Albanese also talked about Australia’s defense budget. Recently, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth suggested that Australia should spend 3.5% of its GDP on defense. But Mr. Albanese said Australia will decide its own defense spending.
“Just picking a number doesn’t help. We need to make sure every dollar we spend gives us real results,” he said.
He compared it to other parts of government. “If the Health Minister asked for a set percent of the GDP but didn’t explain why, we wouldn’t agree. The defense should be treated the same way.”
Working with Neighbours
The Prime Minister also said that Australia’s relationships with nearby countries like Papua New Guinea and Indonesia are just as important as defense spending. “We’re working closely with our neighbors, and that’s something we’ll keep focusing on,” he said.
