In an impressive display, top seed Carlos Alcaraz commenced his 2025 ATP Finals journey with a victory of 7-6(5), 6-2 against Australia's Alex de Minaur on Sunday. Previously unable to win an inaugural match at this esteemed tournament, Alcaraz showcased both resilience and strategy, overcoming a challenging first set before dominating the second. This victory marks a hopeful start to his pursuit of a first ATP Finals title.
Alcaraz faced a fierce opponent in De Minaur, recognized for his swift movements and ability to tackle challenging returns. The Australian battled valiantly, recovering from a 4-1 deficit and thwarting three break points, pushing the initial set into a tiebreak. Nevertheless, Alcaraz held his composure, edging the tiebreak 7-5 and establishing control throughout the match.
As the second set unfolded, both players exchanged early breaks; however, Alcaraz quickly found his footing. His aggressive gameplay and potent forehands helped him secure a 4-1 lead, leaving De Minaur struggling to regain control. Alcaraz's confidence swelled, as he navigated the court with skill, effectively wearing down his opponent.
Post-match, Alcaraz expressed appreciation for the challenge posed by De Minaur. “It was a really tough match,” he stated. “On this surface, Alex utilizes the ball's speed excellently. He’s incredibly quick and tough to face on returns. I’m thrilled to have navigated this challenge.” His infectious energy and interaction with fans were evident throughout the match.
This victory pushes Alcaraz closer to his ambition of finishing the season as the world number one for the second time. To secure this position, he must reach the ATP Finals final with at least one group-stage win or by claiming all his group matches. Opposing him is Jannik Sinner, who must defend his title to maintain a shot at overtaking Alcaraz.
Meanwhile, in another gripping match, former two-time ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev triumphed over American Ben Shelton with a score of 6-3, 7-6(6) in his opening match. The German displayed his formidable serving and baseline strength, starting the match with precision and efficiently taking the first set within just 28 minutes.
Although this was Shelton's first appearance at the ATP Finals, he showed glimpses of his evolving talent. In the second set, he saved two initial break points to maintain competitiveness, eventually forcing a tiebreak. Leading 6-3 and serving for the set, Shelton faced Zverev's trademark comeback, with the German claiming the set 8-6 after winning three consecutive points.
Zverev’s composure in crucial moments proved vital to his victory. His vast experience and steady serving outmatched his younger challenger. The German won 85% of his first-serve points and recorded 10 aces, reminding everyone of his prowess as a top player on the ATP Tour, as he vies for a third ATP Finals title.
