In a concerning development, Dubai Police are drawing attention to an increase in holiday home rental scams after a man was scammed out of AED 8,000 when attempting to secure a chalet online. This incident highlights the surge in fraudulent activities, especially during the holiday period.
The victim discovered a chalet advertisement online and was prompted to pay a deposit and insurance fee. After transferring AED 8,000 for the booking, the scammer became uncontactable as soon as the payment was made, leading the individual to report the matter to the authorities.
Dubai Police indicated that fraudsters frequently exploit individuals seeking holiday rentals online. They create enticing offers using fake photos and urgent messages to coax victims into hasty payments without proper verification of the property. Often, individuals only become aware of the deceit after they have completed the transaction.
Officials pointed out that scammers are particularly active during peak rental seasons, with offers that seem “too good to be true” often being fraudulent. Residents are encouraged to exercise caution when dealing with unfamiliar advertisers on social media and other online platforms.
To safeguard against fraud, Dubai Police recommend that residents verify property details, confirm the identity of the owner, and physically inspect the location before any payment is made. They also emphasized the necessity of utilizing official rental websites and obtaining signed agreements.
As part of their ongoing initiatives under the “Be Aware of Fraud” campaign, authorities urge residents to report any suspicious activities through the e-Crime platform or by calling 901. The warning regarding holiday home rental scams aims to enhance awareness and reduce instances of online fraud in the region.
