Alina Habba, who previously served as Donald Trump’s personal attorney, has stepped down from her role as the US attorney for New Jersey after a court decision declared her appointment unlawful. This resignation is the consequence of a ruling stating that her temporary position, filled without the necessary Senate confirmation, breached federal law.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi accepted her resignation but noted that Habba will keep her position at the Justice Department as a senior adviser while exploring options for further review. Habba expressed her decision to resign was made to “ensure the stability and integrity of the office,” reiterating her ongoing commitment to advocating for lawful appointments across the country.
Throughout her time in office, Newark experienced a 20% drop in crime, while Camden celebrated its first summer without a homicide in half a century. Habba had previously represented Trump in significant legal matters, including the hush-money case in New York.
Her resignation brings attention to the broader challenges surrounding acting US attorney appointments, with many others appointed by Trump also having been found to have served unlawfully.
