Amazon has announced that its operations in India have become "water positive," meaning the company now returns more water to local communities than it consumes across its facilities. The milestone comes at a time when global technology companies are facing increased scrutiny over the environmental impact of expanding artificial intelligence and data centre infrastructure.
The company said it achieved the target a year ahead of schedule through a combination of water-saving measures and community water restoration projects.
Focus on Sustainable Operations
According to Amazon, its efforts included reducing water consumption across data centres, offices and warehouses while investing in watershed restoration and efficient irrigation systems. These initiatives helped the company replenish more water than it used during its operations in India.
Officials described the achievement as an important step toward Amazon's broader sustainability goals.
Data Centres Under Environmental Scrutiny
The announcement comes as major technology firms, including Amazon, Microsoft and Google, face increasing pressure from investors and environmental groups regarding the impact of large-scale data centres.
Data centres are critical for cloud computing and artificial intelligence services, but they often require significant resources, including electricity and water, to operate efficiently.

AWS Expansion Continues in India
Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company's cloud computing division, continues to expand its presence in India. The company has committed to investing billions of dollars in the country to strengthen cloud infrastructure, artificial intelligence capabilities and export opportunities.
AWS is also planning major investments in Maharashtra as part of its long-term growth strategy.
Water Challenges Remain Significant
India faces increasing water stress due to its large population and limited freshwater resources. The country holds only a small share of the world's freshwater supply despite supporting nearly one-fifth of the global population.
Several regions have experienced water shortages this year, with weak monsoon conditions and rising temperatures adding further pressure on existing resources.
Amazon Says Indian Data Centres Avoid Water Cooling
Amazon stated that its data centres in India do not use water-based cooling systems. The company said this approach helps reduce operational water consumption while supporting sustainable infrastructure development.
The company has also set a global target of becoming water positive across all its data centre operations by 2030.
Investment and Sustainability Go Hand in Hand
As technology companies continue expanding digital infrastructure across India, environmental sustainability is becoming a key focus area. Amazon said it plans to continue investing in water conservation projects while supporting the country's growing digital economy.
The company believes that balancing technological growth with responsible resource management will be essential for long-term development.
