Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has announced the launch of Opus 5, the latest addition to its Claude family of AI models. The San Francisco-based company said the new model offers capabilities that are close to its premium Fable 5 model while reducing costs by around 50%, making advanced AI more accessible for businesses, developers and professionals.
According to Anthropic, Opus 5 has been developed for routine workplace use, including document creation, office productivity, coding, and software development. The company believes the model provides a strong balance between performance, efficiency and affordability for users who do not require the highest level of AI computing power.
Speaking to Reuters, Dianne Penn, Anthropic's product leader, said the launch reflects the company's rapid pace of innovation.
She explained that Opus 5 is more efficient than Opus 4.8, which was introduced in May, while continuing Anthropic's strategy of improving intelligence and usability with every new AI generation. "We're building and continue to consistently deliver frontier intelligence and bring that as accessibly as possible with every model generation," Penn told Reuters.
Anthropic said internal testing found that Opus 5 is less capable of exploiting cybersecurity vulnerabilities than its flagship Fable 5 model. Because of this lower risk profile, the company has applied fewer safety restrictions to Opus 5.
The company also stated that the model is more resistant to attempts by users to manipulate or misuse the AI compared with its other currently available Claude models.
Anthropic's flagship Fable 5 model, released in June, remains the company's most advanced AI system. The model was temporarily taken offline following concerns in the United States that its powerful capabilities could potentially be misused by foreign military intelligence.
Penn said users should select Opus 5 for cost-effective daily work, while organisations requiring extended autonomous performance over several days should continue using Fable 5 for more demanding workloads.
Penn also discussed Kimi K3, an open-weight AI model developed by China's Moonshot.
She noted that it remains uncertain how open-weight AI systems will perform when handling large, complex real-world tasks similar to those assigned to Claude. The United States has previously accused Moonshot of benefiting from Anthropic's research without making equivalent contributions.
Unlike proprietary AI systems, open-weight AI models allow users to download, modify and run the models on their own hardware, providing greater flexibility and customisation.
Anthropic said the launch of Opus 5 represents another step toward making advanced artificial intelligence more widely available. By combining strong performance with lower operating costs, the company aims to provide businesses, programmers and professional users with an affordable AI solution for everyday work.
