Former NFL star Antonio Brown is making his way back to Miami to address an attempted murder charge related to a shooting that occurred in May. The 36-year-old athlete, who enjoyed a notable 12-year career in the National Football League, was moved from New Jersey to Florida on Tuesday after waiving his right to extradition. His attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, stated that a written not guilty plea has been submitted on Brown's behalf. He may appear in a Miami courthouse as early as Wednesday morning for a bail hearing.
According to legal documents, the shooting incident took place on May 16, following a celebrity boxing event in Florida. Investigators assert that Antonio Brown seized a firearm from a security team member and discharged two shots towards Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, the victim. Nantambu reported to law enforcement that one of the bullets grazed his neck during the confrontation. Earlier that evening, both individuals were said to have engaged in a physical altercation before the shooting ensued.
Initially, no arrest was made because police had not identified Nantambu as the victim. However, on May 21, Nantambu provided a detailed account to investigators, identifying Brown as the shooter, which led to the issuance of an arrest warrant. Brown was subsequently detained in Dubai, where he had been living, before being extradited to the U.S. and taken to New Jersey. On Tuesday, it was confirmed through Essex County Jail records that Brown was transferred to Florida.
Brown’s lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, claims the incident was purely an act of self-defense. Eiglarsh stated publicly, “Antonio Brown was assaulted that night and acted within his legal right for self-protection.” He further emphasized that the actions were a clear response to “the alleged victim’s violent conduct.” Following the incident, Brown took to social media to assert that he was “attacked by several individuals seeking to steal my jewelry and cause me harm.”
In Florida, being charged with second-degree attempted murder is serious, with potential consequences including up to 15 years in prison and fines reaching $10,000 if convicted. Legal analysts note that much may hinge on whether the court recognizes Brown's self-defense claim and the availability of video evidence or eyewitness accounts to corroborate his narrative.
Prior to his legal issues, Antonio Brown had been residing in Dubai, often sharing his new lifestyle and ventures through social media. He was reportedly detained following a U.S. warrant and subsequently extradited to New Jersey before being moved to Miami. His activity online suggested a focus on rebuilding his life post-football.
During his NFL tenure, Antonio Brown emerged as one of the league's premier wide receivers, playing for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With over 12,000 receiving yards, 928 receptions, and 88 touchdowns across 12 seasons, he earned seven Pro Bowl selections, celebrated for his agility and skill in route running. Nonetheless, his career faced turmoil due to a slew of off-field incidents and legal challenges.
Brown’s professional career effectively came to a halt in 2021 following a notorious event during a game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the New York Jets, when he dramatically removed his jersey and exited the field. This led to his immediate termination from the team. Since then, he has battled various legal issues involving domestic violence, child support disputes, and accusations of battery.
The attempted murder allegations add to the growing list of legal troubles that have shadowed Brown since his decline in the NFL. He has also faced accusations in several violent incidents. Despite the controversies, Brown retains a dedicated following and has consistently expressed his interest in returning to professional sports or entertainment.
As it stands, Antonio Brown remains in legal custody as he awaits his bail hearing in Miami. His legal representation is expected to argue that the incident was an act of self-defense. Given Brown’s celebrity status and history, this case is anticipated to draw significant media spotlight. A conviction could mean a substantial prison term, potentially squashing any aspirations for a return to sports or public life.
