Anwar Pushes South China Sea Code at Summit

Anwar Pushes South China Sea Code at Summit

Post by : Shakul

Anwar Ibrahim has announced plans to urge ASEAN leaders and China to accelerate the finalization of the long-pending South China Sea Code of Conduct (COC) during the upcoming ASEAN Leaders’ Summit in the Philippines next month. The move is aimed at strengthening regional stability and ensuring peaceful management of maritime disputes.

Speaking in Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian Prime Minister emphasized that despite occasional tensions, particularly involving China and the Philippines, the overall situation in the South China Sea remains relatively stable. He highlighted that both ASEAN nations and China have maintained constructive engagement across trade, security, and diplomatic channels.

Anwar Ibrahim also stressed the importance of resolving regional issues independently, without external interference. He reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to maintaining peace and cooperation while safeguarding its sovereignty and interests in strategic waters such as the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean.

The Code of Conduct discussions date back to the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea and formal negotiations initiated in 2013. Leaders, including Chinese Premier Li Qiang, have previously agreed to expedite the process. The upcoming summit is expected to play a crucial role in advancing negotiations toward a legally binding agreement.
