Anwar Ibrahim will lead the Malaysian delegation to the 48th Asean Summit and Related Meetings in Cebu beginning tomorrow. The important regional gathering will bring together leaders from Southeast Asian nations to discuss major political, economic, and security challenges affecting the region. Malaysian officials said the summit will provide an important platform for cooperation and regional unity during a time of growing global uncertainty.
According to Malaysian ambassador to the Philippines Datuk Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino Anthony, leaders are expected to focus heavily on the impact of the ongoing West Asia conflict on Southeast Asia. Discussions will include concerns related to regional stability, energy supply security, food security, and the protection of Asean citizens living in affected regions. Officials believe the summit comes at a critical moment as global conflicts continue to influence international trade and economic conditions.
The Malaysian government said its participation reflects the country’s continued commitment towards strengthening Asean centrality, unity, and resilience. Leaders are expected to exchange views on future plans for the Asean Community and discuss ways to improve regional cooperation across political, economic, and social sectors. Malaysia has consistently supported stronger partnerships within Asean to help maintain peace and stability in the region.
Anwar Ibrahim, who also serves as Malaysia’s Finance Minister, will be accompanied by his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Dr Wan Ismail and several senior ministers. The delegation includes Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hassan, Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, and Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Indera Mohd Shahar Abdullah. Their participation highlights the importance Malaysia places on regional diplomacy and economic collaboration.
Upon arrival in Cebu on Thursday, Anwar is scheduled to participate in the Special Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area, commonly known as the BIMP-EAGA Summit. The regional initiative focuses on improving economic growth, investment, trade, tourism, and infrastructure cooperation among participating countries in Southeast Asia.
On Friday, the Malaysian Prime Minister will attend the main 48th Asean Summit sessions and is also expected to hold several sideline meetings with fellow Asean leaders. These discussions may involve bilateral cooperation, regional trade opportunities, and shared concerns related to security and economic growth. Officials said the summit provides a valuable opportunity for direct dialogue among regional leaders.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Mohamad Hassan will participate in several important ministerial meetings before the summit officially begins. These include the Asean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, the Asean Political-Security Community Council Meeting, the Asean Coordinating Council Meeting, and the Joint Foreign and Economic Ministers’ Meeting. Malaysian officials described these meetings as important steps in improving coordination between regional political and economic strategies.
The Philippines officially assumed the Asean chairmanship from Malaysia on January 1, 2026. Under the theme “Navigating Our Future, Together,” the Philippines plans to focus on peace and security, economic prosperity, and people empowerment during its leadership term. The country is expected to host more than 650 Asean-related meetings, including two major summits and several ministerial conferences throughout the year.
Cebu, often called the Queen City of the South, is hosting the summit from May 6 to May 8, 2026. The city is recognised as one of the Philippines’ most important economic and maritime centres after Manila. Home to more than five million residents, Cebu plays a major role in shipping, trade, tourism, and the business process outsourcing industry. Recent economic data showed that Cebu’s economy grew by 5.9 per cent in 2024, supported strongly by its services and industrial sectors.
