Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has credited Malaysia’s civil service for the country's strong performance in the IMD World Competitiveness Index 2026. Speaking at a gathering with government officials in Alor Gajah, Melaka, Anwar said the achievement was the result of teamwork, efficient governance and the dedication of civil servants across the nation.
Malaysia moved up eight places to rank 15th globally in the latest competitiveness index, marking one of the country's strongest performances in recent years. The Prime Minister said the improvement reflects the effectiveness of public institutions and the government's commitment to delivering quality services.
Malaysia’s Competitiveness Gains Draw International Attention
Anwar revealed that Malaysia's progress has attracted attention from foreign leaders, including Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov. During a recent visit, the Turkmen leader reportedly praised Malaysia’s performance and expressed interest in learning from the country's administrative system.

According to Anwar, the recognition demonstrates that Malaysia is moving in the right direction and gaining respect internationally for its governance model and public service delivery.
Why Did Anwar Praise The Civil Service?
Addressing civil servants during the event, Anwar emphasized that the achievement should not be credited to one individual but to the entire government machinery. He said the efficiency and professionalism of public servants played a major role in helping Malaysia improve its competitiveness ranking.
The Prime Minister noted that civil servants continue to drive policy implementation, support economic growth and improve services that directly benefit citizens and businesses across the country.
International Interest In Malaysia’s Governance Model
Anwar said President Berdimuhamedov has proposed sending a delegation of civil servants from Turkmenistan to Malaysia for discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions. The initiative is expected to focus on governance practices, public administration and service delivery improvements.
The proposal highlights growing international recognition of Malaysia’s administrative capabilities and the effectiveness of its government institutions.
Event Highlights In Melaka
The meet-and-greet session was held at the Centre of Excellence for Engineering and Technology (CREaTE) in Simpang Ampat, Melaka. Several senior government leaders attended the programme, including Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
Officials discussed government performance, public service reforms and efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s position in the global economy.
Newsible Asia Opinion: Malaysia’s climb to 15th place in the IMD World Competitiveness Index 2026 reflects growing confidence in the country's economic management, public administration and business environment. The recognition from international leaders further highlights Malaysia's improving reputation as a competitive and investment-friendly nation.
While the achievement deserves praise, global competitiveness is not measured by rankings alone. Sustaining this momentum will require continuous reforms, faster digital transformation, stronger institutional transparency and policies that encourage innovation, investment and job creation.
From Newsible Asia’s perspective, the real test begins now. Maintaining a top-tier position will depend on how effectively Malaysia adapts to global economic challenges, technological disruptions and increasing regional competition. Consistency in governance and execution will be key to converting this recognition into long-term national success.
If current reform efforts continue and public sector efficiency remains a priority, Malaysia has the potential not only to maintain its position but also to emerge as one of Asia’s leading competitive economies in the years ahead.
