The 165th Council of the League of Arab States held its regular session in Amman, Jordan, under the leadership of Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdul Latif bin Rashid Al Zayani. On this significant occasion, Arab foreign ministers gathered to deliberate on crucial regional issues and foster collaborative efforts among Arab nations.
Commencing the meeting, Al Zayani expressed gratitude to Jordan’s Deputy Prime Minister, Ayman Safadi, for hosting the event and providing a warm welcome to the attendees. He highlighted the importance of aligning strategies and maintaining communication amid escalating regional concerns.
During his address, Al Zayani underscored the necessity of unifying Arab nations to ensure collective national security and respond to the aspirations for security, stability, and development across the region.
He pointed out recent alarming regional incidents, particularly missile and drone assaults from Iran against Gulf Cooperation Council states and Jordan, labeling these acts as violations of international law that jeopardize civilian lives.
Highlighting the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz, Al Zayani mentioned that Iran’s actions there have affected international shipping, disrupted the global economy, and left thousands of sailors separated from their families.
The foreign minister welcomed the recent understanding between the United States and Iran aimed at de-escalating tensions, viewing it as a step toward a more comprehensive agreement.
He reiterated the importance of respecting the sovereignty of regional states and ensuring the safety of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz per Security Council Resolution No. 2817.
Al Zayani commended US President Donald Trump’s initiatives to bolster peace in the region, also recognizing the mediation efforts from Pakistan and Qatar to promote dialogue.
The ministerial gathering convened under directives from Arab leaders to endorse a new Secretary-General for the League of Arab States.
Following suitable deliberations, the appointment of Nabil Fahmy was officially confirmed, and he is set to commence his role at the start of next month. Additionally, the council sanctioned the appointments of various heads of the League’s diplomatic missions.
Al Zayani took time to acknowledge the significant contributions of outgoing Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, praising his adept leadership during his tenure amid challenging times for the Arab world.
His commitment to defending Arab interests and fostering unity among member states has been commendable, particularly during the preparations for the upcoming 33rd Arab Summit.
With Bahrain’s unwavering commitment to increasing cooperation among Arab nations, Al Zayani affirmed the intent to work closely with the General Secretariat led by the new Secretary-General to enhance the League’s responsiveness to regional issues.
The Bahraini delegation present at the meeting comprised Sheikh Khalifa bin Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Ambassador of Bahrain to Jordan, along with other prominent officials including Ambassador Fawzia Zainal and Ambassador Saeed Abdulkhaleq Saeed, among others.
