Argentina will be without three pivotal players for their forthcoming friendly against Angola, as they did not fulfill the necessary health protocols tied to the yellow fever vaccination. The Asociación del Fútbol Argentino (AFA) announced on Monday that Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, Nahuel Molina, and Giuliano Simeone will be absent from the squad for the fixture this Friday in Luanda.
According to the official statement from the AFA, the players were unable to complete the vaccination process in time for entry into Angola. “The required health procedures concerning the yellow fever vaccine were not finalized in time for these players,” read the statement. This step aligns with international travel health guidelines, given that yellow fever is prevalent in various regions of Africa and South America.
Yellow fever, a mosquito-borne viral illness, poses severe health risks for those unvaccinated. Countries like Angola mandate proof of vaccination for incoming travelers to mitigate the risk of outbreaks. The AFA’s communication underscores the need for compliance with global health protocols, especially in high-level athletic events. Unfortunately, logistical delays prevented the affected players from receiving their vaccinations in time to travel.
The absence of Alvarez, Molina, and Simeone is a setback for Argentina’s tactical arrangements. Each of them has been performing well at Atletico Madrid this season. Alvarez, a standout in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad, has excelled under Diego Simeone. Additionally, Molina’s absence impacts the team's right defensive side, while Simeone's missing presence is felt in the attacking lineup.
Despite the situation, Argentina will still feature other Atletico Madrid players, Thiago Almada and Nicolas Gonzalez, who completed their vaccinations and are cleared to travel. Coach Lionel Scaloni has shown confidence in his remaining squad, stressing the need to maintain rhythm and fitness as preparations continue for the next World Cup.
This match in Luanda signifies Argentina’s inaugural senior match in Angola. It's part of a broader initiative by the AFA to enhance international football connections and engage fans globally. For the reigning champions, it also serves as a stage to evaluate younger talents and experiment with strategies heading into future competitions.
Originally, Argentina planned a second friendly in India during this international window. However, that match has now been postponed due to a lack of timely FIFA approval. This was anticipated to be held in Kolkata but was canceled owing to logistical and administrative setbacks. The AFA hopes to find an alternative date for this match once all necessary permissions are secured.
As Argentina prepares for the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, this international window serves as an important time for team development. Coach Scaloni and his team intend to use these friendlies for evaluating new players, refining tactics, and nurturing team chemistry. Even absent several senior players, the primary focus remains on maintaining consistent performance standards.
The AFA reaffirms that the health of players and adherence to international medical protocols are of utmost importance. Football governing bodies globally must follow these travel and vaccination regulations to ensure athlete and host nation safety. This situation illustrates that elite athletes are also subject to worldwide health guidelines and must comply like any other traveler.
Although Argentina’s friendly against Angola will progress without three key players, this scenario accentuates the necessity for timely health preparation for international sporting events. For the AFA and its medical staff, such incidents may encourage a re-evaluation of future travel logistics to sidestep comparable challenges. Nevertheless, the world champions remain focused and determined to deliver a commendable performance as they continue their journey toward defending their title in the upcoming World Cup.
