The much-anticipated premiere of Wicked: For Good in Singapore on November 13 took a frightening turn when a man identified as Australian influencer Johnson Wen lunged toward Ariana Grande on the yellow-brick-road carpet. This alarming event overshadowed the celebration of the film’s debut and sparked significant worry among attendees and fans.
Premiere Turned Turbulent
Held at Universal Studios Singapore, the premiere was meant to be a joyous occasion for the film adaptation of Wicked. Ariana Grande, portraying Glinda, made her entrance alongside co-stars Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum, greeting fans until chaos ensued.
Eyewitness videos show the man sprinting toward Grande from behind before attempting to grab her. Sporting a white shirt, shorts, and identifiable long black hair streaked with blue, he is recognized as “Pyjama Man,” known for orchestrating such disruptions.
Grande reacted with shock, trying to distance herself as he embraced her. Cynthia Erivo quickly intervened, stepping in to shield Grande while shouting at Wen to stop. Security swiftly removed him from the scene, and both Michelle Yeoh and other team members rushed to comfort Ariana.
Visibly rattled, Grande remained near her co-stars as she regained her composure.
Understanding “Pyjama Man”
Johnson Wen, 25, quickly gained infamy among fans as he has a history of reckless public antics. The nickname “Pyjama Man” reflects his tendency to show up at events in sleepwear. However, his antics have increasingly ventured into perilous territory.
Previously, Wen caused a scene by jumping on stage during a Katy Perry concert in June and disrupting a The Weeknd concert in August, raising concerns about his ability to infiltrate secure venues.
In a controversial move, Wen shared a video of his encounter with Ariana shortly after the incident, captioning it with, “Dear Ariana Grande, Thank You for letting me Jump on the Yellow Carpet with You.” This post was met with swift backlash from fans.
Public Outcry and Security Concerns
Comments on Wen’s post highlighted widespread criticism, exposing the danger he posed to celebrities like Grande. A user pointedly remarked, “You’re the reason why we get fewer appearances in Asia,” while another asked, “Are you happy now? Does it bring you joy to disturb celebrities?”
Many users questioned why he continues to avoid serious repercussions, with one commenter asking, “How aren’t you in jail?” The consensus among fans was clear: the disruption was callous and highlighted broader issues regarding celebrity safety.
Significance of the Incident
As celebrity events draw intense attention, security oversights such as this raise urgent questions about the efficacy of safety measures at red carpet events. With an upsurge in fan-related incidents and attention-seeking behavior, studios must enhance their security protocols for high-profile promotional events.
For Wicked: For Good, which is heavily reliant on global marketing efforts, such incidents threaten the film’s festive launch and could deter future engagements in certain areas.
