The Arizona Wildcats men's basketball team showcased their dominance with a resounding 103-73 win against Denver on Monday night in Tucson. Currently ranked No. 2 nationally, Arizona controlled the game from the outset. Freshman guards Brayden Burries and Ivan Kharchenkov were pivotal, each contributing 20 points, helping Arizona maintain a perfect 6-0 record.
The talented freshmen proved vital throughout the match, with Dwayne Aristode adding 17 points and Koa Peat scoring 12 before fouling out. Their contributions kept the pressure on Denver consistently. Off the bench, Tobe Awaka also made a significant impact, scoring 12 points while grabbing a remarkable 15 rebounds, reinforcing Arizona's presence in the paint.
The Wildcats dominated rebounding, outperforming the Pioneers 50-29, allowing for numerous additional scoring opportunities. Arizona's inside game was particularly effective, boasting a striking 50-22 edge in points scored near the basket. Burries collected seven rebounds, while Kharchenkov and Aristode added five each, underlining their effective control.
Arizona exemplified teamwork with their ball movement, achieving 26 assists on 41 baskets. Anthony Dell’Orso led with seven assists, maintaining pressure on Denver and creating scoring opportunities.
The Pioneers attempted to keep pace but struggled against Arizona's swift, potent offense. Carson Johnson led Denver with 18 points, while Zane Nelson chipped in 17. However, any hopes of a comeback faded as Arizona's offensive prowess took over.
The Wildcats burst out of the gate, scoring the initial 13 points before Denver found the net. Arizona surged ahead with a 19-2 run, extending their lead to 33-7. By halftime, they led 56-28, having shot over 52 percent from the field, with Burries and Kharchenkov alone outscoring the entire Denver team for a stretch.
In the second half, Arizona continued their strong performance, shooting nearly 57 percent overall and sinking 12 of 28 three-point attempts. Aristode excelled with four three-pointers, while Burries added three, demonstrating their commanding presence.
This victory reinforces Arizona's position as one of the top teams in the nation. With stellar teamwork, young talent, and powerful scoring, they remain formidable contenders. Burries, Kharchenkov, and their teammates are gearing up for the challenges ahead.
