Army Officer Assaults Airline Staff Over Cabin Bag Dispute

Army Officer Assaults Airline Staff Over Cabin Bag Dispute

Post by : Jyoti Gupta

A serious incident took place at Srinagar airport on the morning of July 26, where a senior officer from the Indian Army physically attacked airline staff during a heated argument about excess cabin baggage. The situation turned violent quickly, leading to severe injuries among the ground staff and sparking national concern.

According to details from those present during the check-in process for a flight to Delhi, the Army officer arrived with two pieces of cabin luggage. Together, the bags weighed around 16 kilograms, more than double the allowed hand luggage limit of 7 kilograms.

When the airline's staff politely informed the officer that he would need to pay an extra fee for the extra weight, the officer reportedly refused to pay. Instead of cooperating, he became angry and started arguing with the ground staff. Soon, the disagreement turned into a violent physical attack.

Video footage captured by a bystander showed the officer using a metal queue stand — usually used to guide passengers in line — as a weapon to hit the airline workers. This object is made of steel and can cause serious harm when used forcefully, especially in a rage-filled moment like this one.

According to eyewitnesses and statements made by the airline, the officer didn’t just stop at refusing payment. He forcefully entered the aerobridge — the walkway connecting the airport to the aircraft — without completing the proper boarding procedures. This is considered a serious violation of airport safety and aviation rules.

At that point, personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), who are in charge of maintaining airport security, stepped in and brought the officer back to the boarding gate. However, instead of calming down, the officer reportedly became even more aggressive.

In a sudden attack, he physically assaulted four members of the ground crew. One employee reportedly suffered a spinal fracture, while another suffered a serious injury to the jaw after being violently kicked in the face. According to the statement, one staff member collapsed and fainted due to the repeated blows, but the attacker didn’t stop. Witnesses say he continued to kick and hit the unconscious worker, even as another team member bent down to help.

That helper also ended up getting hurt, bleeding heavily from the nose and mouth due to a powerful kick while they were trying to assist the fallen colleague.

The four injured employees were rushed to the hospital immediately for treatment. Doctors later confirmed that the injuries were not just minor scrapes — they included fractures, internal bleeding, and trauma.

This violent incident has left many shocked, especially because the person involved is a senior Army officer, a position usually associated with discipline and restraint. The airline has since filed a formal police complaint (FIR), and the CCTV footage from the airport has been submitted as evidence.

The airline has also taken steps to ban the officer from flying in the future. Under aviation rules, passengers who behave violently or dangerously can be placed on a "no-fly list", which prevents them from flying with any airline until a proper review is completed.

The incident has been brought to the attention of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and the airline has asked for strong action to be taken so that such behavior does not happen again.

The Indian Army, responding to the reports, stated that they are aware of the situation and is waiting for the results of the police investigation. Army sources said that they are committed to maintaining discipline and will take the appropriate steps once the facts are clear.

This shocking event has gone viral on social media, with many people expressing anger and disappointment. Some are asking how a trained officer could lose control like this, while others are demanding that strict legal action be taken. Many have also shown support for the injured staff, saying that airline workers deserve respect and safety in their workplaces.

As investigations continue, this case highlights the importance of respecting rules and treating service workers with dignity. Whether you're a common traveler or someone holding a powerful position, violence is never the answer — especially not in a sensitive and secure place like an airport.
