Pop artist Sabrina Carpenter and the publisher of Franklin the Turtle, a beloved Canadian children's character, have publicly criticized the Trump administration for exploiting their creative works.
Carpenter expressed her outrage after her song, Juno, was featured in a video montage showcasing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations. She took to Twitter to express her dismay, stating: “This video is evil and disgusting. Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda.” The clip incorporated her lyrics: “Have you ever tried this one? Bye-bye.”
In a similar vein, Kids Can Press, the publisher behind Franklin, condemned a tweet by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The post portrayed Franklin with a bazooka aimed at boats and was captioned “Franklin Targets Narco Terrorists.” The publisher underscored that Franklin embodies kindness, empathy, and inclusivity, and any violent or unauthorized representations starkly oppose these principles.
Responding to the backlash, the Pentagon remarked that Franklin “likely wouldn’t support drug cartels or promote the kindness of narco-terrorists.”
This incident is indicative of a larger pattern, as numerous artists—including Abba, Bruce Springsteen, Olivia Rodrigo, Rihanna, Phil Collins, Beyoncé, and Adele—have voiced their discontent regarding the unauthorized use of their music or copyrighted material.
