ASEAN Summit Focuses on Energy and Security

ASEAN Summit Focuses on Energy and Security

Post by : Shakul

The 48th ASEAN Summit officially opened on Friday, May 8, 2026, at the Mactan Expo in Cebu, Philippines, bringing together leaders and representatives from ASEAN member nations to discuss regional cooperation, economic stability, energy security, and food sustainability. Thailand’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Anutin Charnvirakul, attended the opening ceremony alongside his wife and joined fellow ASEAN leaders during the major plenary session held at Hall 1 of the Mactan Expo.

During the summit, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed ASEAN leaders and stressed the importance of maintaining unity and cooperation at a time when the global situation remains uncertain and unstable. He congratulated the Philippines for successfully leading ASEAN as the chair country and also extended congratulations to Vietnam’s Prime Minister Le Minh Hung on his appointment. The Thai Prime Minister thanked ASEAN member nations for their support and confidence following his return as Prime Minister of Thailand.

The Prime Minister stated that ASEAN has successfully overcome many difficult situations in the past and has always emerged stronger through cooperation and shared responsibility. He said the current global climate, including conflicts in the Middle East and rising economic pressures, is testing the strength and resilience of ASEAN once again. According to him, ASEAN must remain united, adaptable, and prepared for future global challenges.

Speaking on the summit theme, “Navigating Our Future, Together,” Prime Minister Anutin explained that the slogan reflects the urgent need for stronger cooperation among ASEAN nations in every sector. He emphasized that the region cannot face global uncertainty alone and must work collectively to ensure peace, economic growth, and long-term regional stability.

One of the key concerns raised during the summit was energy security. The Prime Minister highlighted that disruptions in global maritime transport routes and increasing instability in international supply chains are directly affecting energy prices across the region. He urged ASEAN nations to strengthen maritime security and ensure freedom of navigation in important sea routes. He also encouraged faster implementation of regional projects such as the ASEAN Power Grid and greater investment in renewable energy sources including solar power and biofuels.

Food security was another major issue discussed at the summit. Prime Minister Anutin said rising fuel and fertilizer costs are creating pressure on agricultural production and increasing food prices in many ASEAN countries. He suggested expanding successful regional cooperation models such as the Thailand-Singapore rice trade agreement to ensure stable food supplies during emergencies and future crises. Thailand also reaffirmed its readiness to support ASEAN nations as one of the world’s major food producers.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the protection and safety of ASEAN citizens during international conflicts and emergencies. Referring to the recent tensions in the Middle East, he explained that Thailand had coordinated large-scale evacuation operations to safely bring thousands of Thai citizens back home. He noted that the mission demonstrated the importance of regional coordination and humanitarian cooperation among ASEAN member states during times of crisis.

ASEAN leaders at the summit agreed that modern global challenges are deeply interconnected and require a unified response. Energy security, food supply, climate risks, and human safety can no longer be addressed separately. Leaders emphasized the importance of building stronger regional systems capable of responding quickly to emergencies, disasters, and geopolitical tensions that may impact Southeast Asia in the future.

At the conclusion of the plenary session, ASEAN leaders officially approved the Cebu Protocol to amend the ASEAN Charter and support Timor-Leste’s future membership in ASEAN. Several important declarations were also endorsed during the summit, including agreements on maritime cooperation, regional resilience related to the Middle East situation, disaster response cooperation under the ASPECT Framework, and the empowerment of youth in climate action and disaster resilience. The summit highlighted ASEAN’s determination to remain strong, united, and forward-looking in an increasingly uncertain global environment.
