Several Asian nations, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, and Pakistan, are reintroducing work-from-home (WFH) policies as global oil prices surge amid geopolitical tensions.
Crude oil prices recently crossed the $100 per barrel mark, driven by instability in the Middle East, forcing governments to adopt urgent measures to reduce fuel consumption and protect economic stability.
In Indonesia, officials are considering partial remote work and online schooling to reduce commuting, which accounts for a significant share of fuel use. Coordinating Minister Airlangga Hartarto stated that remote work could potentially cut national fuel consumption by up to 20%.
Similarly, Vietnam has urged businesses to adopt WFH policies after sharp increases in fuel prices triggered long queues at petrol stations. Authorities are also exploring alternative energy suppliers and have temporarily removed import tariffs to ease the burden.
Thailand has implemented remote work across government departments, alongside energy-saving measures such as limiting air-conditioning usage and reducing official travel.
In the Philippines, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has introduced flexible work arrangements, including a four-day office workweek for non-teaching staff, with remote work on Fridays.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has enforced stricter measures, including remote work mandates for public sector employees, reduced workweeks, and temporary school closures. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that these steps are necessary to stabilize the economy amid rising fuel costs.
The return of remote work policies highlights how governments are once again turning to strategies first widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic to address new economic challenges.
Experts say such measures not only reduce fuel demand but also help countries manage inflationary pressures caused by volatile energy markets.
