5.4 Magnitude Quake Hits Assam, Tremors Felt Across South Asia

5.4 Magnitude Quake Hits Assam, Tremors Felt Across South Asia

Post by : Meena Ariff

A 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook Assam, India, early Monday morning, sending strong tremors across several South Asian countries and raising concerns among residents in the region. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the quake was located in the Dhing area of Assam, originating at a depth of 35 kilometers.

The seismic event occurred at 4:47 AM Bangladesh time, jolting early risers and causing widespread panic in the affected regions. In Assam, residents reported shaking buildings, rattling windows, and fallen objects, prompting many to rush outdoors as a precaution. The tremor was also felt in other parts of India, including nearby states, where local authorities confirmed brief disruptions but no immediate reports of significant damage.

Neighboring Bangladesh experienced noticeable tremors, particularly in major cities like Dhaka and Sylhet. Citizens described swaying furniture and a momentary sense of unease as the earthquake passed. The quake’s impact extended beyond India and Bangladesh, with residents in Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar, and even parts of China reporting mild to moderate shaking.

Authorities in Assam and the surrounding regions quickly mobilized emergency response teams to inspect critical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public buildings, for any structural damage. Officials have urged residents to remain calm, stay vigilant, and follow standard earthquake safety measures, including staying away from unstable structures and preparing for potential aftershocks.

While initial assessments suggest that there have been no major casualties or injuries, local disaster management authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The USGS and regional seismic monitoring agencies are tracking aftershocks and providing updates to ensure public safety.

Experts have reminded communities in earthquake-prone areas to maintain emergency kits and follow preparedness guidelines, as tremors of this magnitude, although moderate, can sometimes trigger localized damage or landslides in vulnerable areas.
