Australia has named a 15-player group for the opening Ashes Test at Optus Stadium, Perth later this month. With captain Pat Cummins sidelined by a back problem, Steve Smith will take the leadership role and Travis Head has been appointed vice-captain. The selectors have yet to confirm the matchday eleven.
Chair of selectors George Bailey described the group as well balanced and noted that, with 14 squad members involved in the upcoming Sheffield Shield round, the selection panel will continue to monitor performances before settling on the first Test combination.
Three cricketers are poised to earn their Test caps: batsman Jake Weatherald and pace bowlers Brendan Doggett and Sean Abbott. Weatherald is being considered for an opening berth alongside Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja. Bailey highlighted Weatherald’s sustained form over the past 18 months and said his technique fits the squad’s makeup.
All-rounders Cameron Green — recently returned from back surgery — and Beau Webster are included, as is wicketkeeper Alex Carey with Josh Inglis named as cover. The fast-bowling unit and spin options are anchored by Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland and Nathan Lyon.
Bailey also expressed hope that Pat Cummins could be available later in the series if his recovery progresses well. When asked about the starting eleven, he remained cautious, saying the final decision will be made nearer the match and could be confirmed at the toss.
Sam Konstas, who opened in three Tests during the recent West Indies tour, was omitted after a lean domestic run — managing only one fifty across seven innings this season.
The Ashes begin at Optus Stadium from 21 to 25 November, followed by Tests in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.
England had earlier announced a 16-man squad in September, led by Ben Stokes, with Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley earmarked as the opening pair.
