An 80-year-old Australian woman has died on Lizard Island in the Great Barrier Reef after being left behind during a shore excursion from a cruise ship. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) has launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Family members identified her as Suzanne. She took part in a guided walk to Cook’s Look, the island’s summit, on October 24. Reportedly unable to maintain the group’s pace, she rested while others continued. Crew members later discovered she was missing; a search was carried out and her body was located the following morning. Queensland Police said the death was "sudden and non-suspicious."
The voyage was aboard the Coral Adventurer, a 60-day luxury itinerary around Australia with fares around AU$80,000 (US$50,000). Fellow travellers and some crew described the outcome as shocking and suggested the situation might have been avoidable.
Suzanne’s daughter, Katherine Rees, criticised the ship’s response, saying the Coral Adventurer departed Lizard Island after an organised excursion without her mother. She called it a failure of care and common sense, adding that her mother—normally healthy and active—felt unwell in the heat, was returned unescorted, and was not subsequently accounted for before the vessel left.
AMSA has confirmed it will interview Coral Adventurer crew when the ship docks in Darwin on November 2. Authorities are examining how the passenger went unrecorded at reboarding and whether required safety procedures were followed.
The case has reignited debate over cruise safety, accountability during shore visits and the adequacy of passenger-check systems. Relatives and safety advocates are urging tighter safeguards to prevent similar tragedies.
The death on Lizard Island has prompted national concern and underscores the need for rigorous emergency preparedness and oversight in cruise operations.
