Ayush Mhatre showcased his rising cricketing prowess with an impressive 110 runs off 53 deliveries for Mumbai, steering the team to a solid victory against Vidarbha. They successfully chased down a target of 193, winning by seven wickets with 13 balls remaining. Mhatre's innings, which included eight fours and eight sixes, marked his inaugural T20 century.
Earlier, Mhatre was appointed the India Under-19 captain for the Asia Cup, adding extra significance to his outstanding innings. Alongside him, Suryakumar Yadav contributed 35 runs off 30 balls, while Shivam Dube sealed the win with a quick 39 off 19. Notably, Mhatre became the youngest player at 18 years and 135 days to notch hundreds across first-class, List-A, and T20 formats, surpassing Rohit Sharma's record. He is the third-youngest to register a men's T20 century, following Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Vijay Zol.
Additionally, Dube showcased his all-around capabilities, taking 3 wickets for 31 runs over four overs, marking a total of four wickets in two matches.
In other matches, Prithvi Shaw celebrated his captaincy debut by leading Maharashtra to their first win with a dazzling 66 runs off 36 balls. His team chased down 192 against Hyderabad with eight balls to spare, supported by Arshin Kulkarni, who remained unbeaten on 89 from 54 deliveries.
Meanwhile, Kerala faced defeat against Railways, falling short by 32 runs in their chase of 150 runs. Despite a strong showing in the opening match, Sanju Samson managed only 19 runs this time, while Rohan Kunnummal, who scored an unbeaten 121 previously, was dismissed for just 8.
In a thrilling encounter, Haryana triumphed over Punjab in a Super Over after a gripping match where Punjab set a target of 208, with Anmolpreet Singh accumulating a brisk 81 off 37. Yuzvendra Chahal made significant contributions with the ball. Haryana needed just one run in the Super Over to clinch the win, securing it with a boundary on the initial delivery. Nishant Sindhu was a standout for Haryana, scoring 61 off 32 balls in regular play.
Venkatesh Iyer displayed remarkable talent for Madhya Pradesh, scoring an unbeaten 55 off 34 balls as they conquered 175 and overpowering Bihar by 62 runs. Young Vaibhav Suryavanshi continues to attract attention despite low scores in two games. On the flip side, Baroda faced their second consecutive loss, with Jitesh Sharma failing to make an impact with scores of 4 and 5. For Puducherry, Adil Ayub Tunda impressed by taking 4 wickets for 30 runs.
The SMAT 2025 tournament is proving to be an exciting showcase for emerging talents like Mhatre, Suryavanshi, and Dube, capturing the interest of cricket fans and talent scouts alike.
