The Badminton World Federation has announced a major change in the sport by introducing a new 3x15 scoring system. This means matches will now be played to 15 points instead of the current 21-point format, starting from January 2027.
The decision has created mixed reactions among players at the Uber Cup Finals 2026 in Horsens. Some players are excited about the change, while others are unsure about how it will affect the game.
Top South Korean player An Se Young said she was surprised by the announcement. However, she added that players will need to adjust quickly and improve their game under the new system.
Young Indonesian player Moh. Zaki Ubaidillah said the new format is more challenging. He explained that with fewer points, players must be ready from the very start, as there is less time to recover or find rhythm during the match.
In contrast, Indonesian doubles star Fajar Alfian welcomed the change and seemed positive about the faster pace of matches. However, some players like Nikolaus Joaquin expressed concern that games may become too short.
Japanese doubles player Kie Nakanishi said she and her partner believe the new system could suit their fast playing style. Shorter matches may favour aggressive and quick players.
The new scoring system was approved during the BWF Annual General Meeting with strong support. Officials say the goal is to make matches more exciting, easier to schedule, and better for players’ recovery.
According to BWF president Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, the change is expected to improve the overall experience for players and fans, while making the sport more competitive.
Even though opinions are divided, players agree that adapting to the new system will be important. The change could bring a new style and strategy to modern badminton.
