Ravens Triumph Over Browns Thanks to Andrews’ Late Heroics

Ravens Triumph Over Browns Thanks to Andrews’ Late Heroics

Post by : Maya Rahman

In a thrilling NFL matchup, the Baltimore Ravens clinched a vital 23-16 victory against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The contest remained competitive throughout, but a surprising play from tight end Mark Andrews dramatically shifted momentum in the game's final moments. Known primarily for his receiving skills, Andrews scored his first career rushing touchdown with a 35-yard run during a fourth-and-1 situation, securing the Ravens' fourth consecutive win and improving their overall season standing to 5-5.

Taking place in Cleveland, the Browns entered with a dismal 2-8 record. Despite the struggles on offense, their defense, particularly featuring star pass rusher Miles Garrett, kept them in contention for much of the game.

With just over three minutes to go, the Ravens faced a critical fourth-and-1. Following a previous play where the Browns halted Derrick Henry, all eyes were on Baltimore to run the ball straight ahead. Instead, the Ravens executed a clever call—Andrews took a direct snap, spun outside, and dashed along the right without encountering any defenders, scoring a touchdown that broke a 16-16 tie.

This pivotal moment not only sealed the win for Baltimore but also marked another milestone for Andrews, who became the franchise’s all-time leader in receiving yards, surpassing former star Derrick Mason.

The game was also significant for rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, making his NFL debut after replacing Cleveland’s starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who left due to a concussion. While the Browns hoped for a spark from the young QB, Sanders faced difficulties against a formidable Ravens defense, completing four passes out of 16 attempts for 47 yards, alongside one interception, though he managed to show some mobility with 16 rushing yards.

Baltimore’s quarterback Lamar Jackson had a mixed performance, throwing for 193 yards and two interceptions. However, he made key plays, like a long pass to Zay Flowers, setting up a touchdown run for Derrick Henry in the second quarter.

On the defensive side, Miles Garrett of the Browns shone with another standout performance, notching four sacks, raising his total to an impressive 15 this season, and 11 in just four games.

Cleveland capitalized on Baltimore's mistakes for early points. The Browns first utilized a miscue from Ravens rookie punt returner Lajohntay Wester, recovering the ball deep in Baltimore territory for a field goal and a brief 6-3 lead.

A short while later, another error bolstered Cleveland’s score as Jackson’s pass deflected off running back Keaton Mitchell, landing in the hands of Devin Bush, who returned it for a touchdown, pushing the score to 13-3.

However, Baltimore quickly retaliated, with Jackson driving a swift 63-yard march culminating in a formidable 1-yard touchdown from Derrick Henry, narrowing the lead to 13-10.

Following that point, the Ravens steadily took command. Their defense tightened, their offense minimized mistakes, and Andrews ultimately delivered the crushing blow with his decisive touchdown run.

This victory keeps Baltimore firmly in the mix for the AFC playoff race. After a rocky start, their current four-game winning streak has fueled their confidence as they head into the latter part of the season. On the other hand, the loss consigns Cleveland to a bleak 2-9 record, severely dimming their playoff prospects.
