A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck deep beneath the Banda Sea near Indonesia’s Maluku Islands on Tuesday, shaking parts of eastern Indonesia. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported the quake occurred around 137 kilometers below the seabed.
Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed the tremor and stated that it posed no tsunami threat. Residents in nearby coastal areas reported brief tremors but no structural damage.
Located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Indonesia frequently experiences earthquakes as massive tectonic plates constantly collide and slide beneath each other. The Banda Sea is one of the most geologically complex areas in the world, formed by the meeting of the Australian and Sunda plates along with several smaller microplates like the Timor, Molucca Sea, and Bird’s Head plates.
The quake comes less than two weeks after a 6.7-magnitude tremor hit Papua province, reminding the nation of its seismic vulnerability. Though no major damage was reported, the incident once again underscores the region’s position at the heart of the world’s most active earthquake belt.
