Two Bengal tiger cubs at Bandung Zoo have died after being infected with a deadly viral disease, raising concerns over animal health management in captivity. The cubs, named Huru and Hara, were just eight months old and had become a popular attraction among visitors.
According to the West Java Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA), the cubs were diagnosed with Panleukopenia, a highly contagious virus that primarily affects young animals by attacking their immune and digestive systems. Symptoms observed included vomiting, diarrhea, and internal bleeding, indicating severe infection.
Authorities stated that extensive medical efforts were made to save the cubs, involving multiple agencies including veterinary hospitals and zoo medical teams. Despite intensive care and isolation measures, both animals succumbed to the illness, with one dying earlier in the week and the other shortly after.
Officials noted that the exact source of the infection is still under investigation, as the virus can spread through environmental exposure or contaminated surfaces. Monitoring of other animals at the zoo is ongoing to prevent further transmission and ensure containment.
The incident has highlighted the vulnerability of endangered species like Bengal tigers in captivity and the importance of strict health protocols. Conservation authorities have expressed sadness over the loss, emphasizing the need for stronger disease prevention strategies in wildlife facilities.
