A lone gorilla named Bua Noi has become the center of a global debate over animal welfare after spending nearly four decades inside a shopping mall zoo in Bangkok. The western lowland gorilla has lived in isolation at Pata Zoo since 1987, raising concerns among activists and conservationists worldwide.
Bua Noi’s story highlights deeper issues surrounding wildlife trafficking and captivity in Southeast Asia. Experts believe her origins may trace back to controversial animal trade routes from Africa, while questions remain about how she ended up alone in such an environment. Her case has drawn attention to gaps in enforcement of international wildlife protection laws.
Animal rights advocates argue that the gorilla’s prolonged isolation in a confined space is harmful, especially for a highly social species. Campaigners have pushed for her relocation to a sanctuary where she could live in a more natural habitat, though zoo authorities maintain she is properly cared for and should not be moved at her age.
Despite years of activism and international pressure, Bua Noi remains at the facility, with her future uncertain. The case continues to spark debate over ethical treatment of animals, the role of zoos, and the responsibilities of governments in protecting endangered species.
