Students and members of minority communities in Bangladesh have launched protests demanding the resumption of construction work on what is expected to become the country's largest statue of Lord Ram. Demonstrations were held in Dhaka after reports of threats against the project in Gaibandha district.
Students of Dhaka University organized a torchlight procession, condemning the alleged desecration of an image of Lord Ram during a recent protest in Gaibandha. Demonstrators said the incident had deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community and called for stronger protection of minority religious rights.
The controversy centers around an 81-foot statue of Lord Ram being constructed at the Sri Sri Radha Govinda Temple in Palashbari upazila of Gaibandha district. According to temple authorities, nearly 80 percent of the project has already been completed before construction was temporarily suspended due to security concerns.
Haridas Chandra Das, founder and president of the temple committee, said organizers were facing increasing pressure from radical groups demanding that the project be halted. He appealed to political leaders, law enforcement agencies and civil society to ensure the statue's completion and protect communal harmony.
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has also expressed concern over alleged threats directed at the temple and the statue project. The organization urged the government to take immediate steps against those spreading communal hatred and attempting to create religious tensions.
Community leaders warned that continued threats against the project could damage Bangladesh’s tradition of religious coexistence. They called on authorities to identify and prosecute individuals responsible for inciting hostility and spreading misinformation related to the statue.
Meanwhile, student leaders participating in the Dhaka protest emphasized that Lord Ram remains one of the most respected figures in Hinduism. They urged the government to guarantee the safety of religious sites and ensure that all citizens can freely practice their faith without fear or intimidation.
