Bangladesh has launched an urgent nationwide review following a surge in Measles cases, with infections crossing 600 in 2026. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed senior officials to assess the situation and strengthen response measures across the country.
According to health authorities, at least 674 measles cases have been reported so far this year, raising alarms about public health, particularly among children. The government has tasked senior ministers with traveling nationwide to evaluate the outbreak and coordinate containment efforts.
Experts warn that measles remains one of the most contagious diseases globally, spreading rapidly through coughs and sneezes. The World Health Organization estimates tens of thousands of deaths each year, mainly among unvaccinated children under five. Complications can include severe respiratory issues and brain inflammation.
Bangladesh had previously made strong progress in vaccination coverage, but a nationwide immunization campaign scheduled for mid-2024 was delayed due to political unrest. Officials say routine vaccination programs have continued, and a new campaign is expected to begin soon to control the spread.
Health authorities emphasize that there is no specific cure for measles once infected, making vaccination and early prevention critical. The government’s latest move aims to strengthen surveillance, improve immunization coverage, and prevent further escalation of the outbreak.
