Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, citing serious health concerns that have affected his ability to perform official duties. The 76-year-old leader announced his decision on Friday through a statement released by his office.
According to the statement, Shahabuddin has been diagnosed with Autonomic Neuropathy, a medical condition that causes occasional loss of consciousness, making it difficult for him to continue serving as head of state.
In his statement, Shahabuddin said recent medical examinations confirmed the neurological condition and explained that he sometimes experiences brief episodes of unconsciousness.
The presidency in Bangladesh is largely a ceremonial position, but the office also serves as the constitutional head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces.
Following Shahabuddin's resignation, the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) will assume the responsibilities of acting president until a new president is elected in accordance with Bangladesh's constitutional process.
The transition is expected to ensure continuity in the country's constitutional functions.
Shahabuddin took office in April 2023 and remained president during one of Bangladesh's most politically turbulent periods, including the 2024 student-led uprising that led to the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from power.
His resignation comes months before Sheikh Hasina's planned return to Bangladesh, while her Awami League party remains banned and many of its senior leaders continue to face legal action or remain in hiding.
Although the president serves as the country's head of state, executive authority in Bangladesh remains with the prime minister and the cabinet.
