Bangladesh Student Leader Shot In Head As Election Violence Grows

Bangladesh Student Leader Shot In Head As Election Violence Grows

Post by : Rameen Ariff

Bangladesh is seeing rising political violence ahead of the upcoming elections. On Monday, a Bangladesh student leader was shot in the head by unknown attackers in the southern city of Khulna.

The injured leader has been identified as Muhammad Motaleb Sikdar. He is a senior member of the student-led National Citizen Party (NCP) and plays an important role in the party’s labour wing.

The shooting happened around 11:45 am at a house in the Sonadanga area of Khulna. According to local reports, Sikdar was inside the house when gunmen attacked him and fired at close range.

Sikdar suffered a gunshot injury on the left side of his head. He was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. Later, doctors moved him to another medical centre for a CT scan to check the damage to his head. He is still under medical care.

At the time of the attack, Sikdar was busy preparing for an upcoming labour rally planned by his party in Khulna. He is a key organiser and also serves as the divisional coordinator of the NCP’s labour group.

Police officials confirmed the incident and said an investigation is ongoing. Officers are trying to identify the attackers and find out why the Bangladesh student leader was shot.

This shooting comes during a tense time in Bangladesh. The country has seen violent protests and clashes after the killing of a radical political leader earlier this month. His death sparked unrest across many cities.

Bangladesh is preparing for national elections in February 2026, and political tensions are high. In recent weeks, there have been reports of street violence, attacks, and growing fear among minority communities.

Political experts warn that such attacks show how unsafe the situation has become. Many people are worried that violence may increase further as election day gets closer.

Authorities have said they will take steps to maintain law and order and ensure peaceful elections. Meanwhile, the condition of the Bangladesh student leader shot in Khulna remains under close watch.
