Following the Chicago Bears' victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, coach Ben Johnson reflected on the potential for even more running plays in the game, which concluded with a score of 24-15. This matchup marked the highest rushing attempts in a non-overtime game for the Bears in three decades, with Johnson pondering whether to have prioritized the run even more.
Star running backs D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai each surpassed the 125-yard mark, a first for the Bears since 1985 when two players achieved 100 rushing yards in the same game.
“That’s incredible,” declared Swift. “Our offensive line created great opportunities. The receivers and tight ends were crucial in blocking, and everything just fell into place.”
The offensive line played a pivotal role in this victory, consistently opening running lanes throughout. Johnson recognized their efforts with a game ball, highlighting the key contributions from Ozzy Trapilo, Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, Jonah Jackson, and Darnell Wright. “Our line was essential for this win,” he stated.
Despite facing challenging wind conditions, quarterback Caleb Williams managed to complete 17 of 36 passes, achieving a passer rating of 56.9—the lowest for the Bears in a victory since 2006. However, outstanding blocking from the receivers and tight ends really supported the rushing game.
The Bears' inaugural touchdown drive highlighted their commitment to the ground game, concluding with Swift’s 3-yard touchdown following a series of seven consecutive rushes. Monangai also made a significant impact, gaining 31 yards on a handoff during a subsequent touchdown drive that spanned 12 plays and 87 yards, pushing Chicago ahead 17-9.
With an impressive total of 280 rushing yards, this game broke a decade-long record against the Eagles, while also marking their second time this season hitting the 280-yard mark, a feat not seen since 1984. They also achieved a franchise-record 17 first downs.
Johnson expressed how the team is built for resilience in adverse conditions, aiming to leverage their strong running game in upcoming matches at Soldier Field and Lambeau Field.
Williams contributed significantly with key throws, including a touchdown pass to tight end Cole Kmet, alongside clutch conversions on third and fourth down. He actively celebrated his teammates’ successes throughout the game.
This victory enhances the Bears' standings while showcasing their formidable running game, strategic play-calling, and teamwork against one of the NFC’s elite teams.
