In a decisive match on Monday, Belgium overwhelmed the United States, clinching a 4-1 victory in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, effectively ending the hosts' journey in the tournament. Charles De Ketelaere netted two goals, while Hans Vanaken and Romelu Lukaku also contributed to Belgium's comprehensive win, propelling them into the quarter-finals.
The match was infused with controversy, particularly surrounding FIFA's suspension of US forward Folarin Balogun's one-match ban just before kick-off. However, the quiet presence of Balogun had little impact as Belgium asserted control throughout.
Belgium's offense burst into action early, taking the lead in the ninth minute. De Ketelaere found the net with a close-range tap-in after a cross from Nicolas Raskin caught the US defense off guard.
Prior to the goal, Timothy Castagne caused trouble for goalkeeper Matt Freese, forcing a fingertip save. Belgium nearly doubled their advantage when Dodi Lukebakio set up Youri Tielemans, who couldn’t capitalize.
Though the United States struggled initially, they found the net in the 31st minute. After Balogun earned a free kick, Malik Tillman’s shot deflected off Vanaken, slipping past Thibaut Courtois.
Their celebration was brief; just a minute later, Belgium regained the lead with a header from De Ketelaere, finishing a well-placed cross from Leandro Trossard.
The United States came out more assertive in the second half, but their hopes for a comeback were dashed by a critical mistake from goalkeeper Matt Freese in the 57th minute.
Freese took too long to play the ball outside his area, enabling Vanaken to seize the chance and find the empty net, swinging momentum back to Belgium.
In stoppage time, Romelu Lukaku capped off the scoring with a composed finish, marking his seventh World Cup goal and 93rd overall for Belgium.
The lopsided score sent a wave of US fans toward the exits as Belgium solidified their path to the quarter-finals.
Much anticipation surrounded the pre-game storyline of Balogun’s reinstatement following an earlier red card. Despite this, his influence was limited to winning the free kick leading to the US goal.
With this victory, Belgium advanced to the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals for the third time in four tournaments and is set to clash with European champions Spain in Los Angeles on Friday.
