In an impressive display, Anthony Black notched a career-high 31 points, propelling the Orlando Magic to a decisive 144-103 victory against the Philadelphia 76ers in an NBA Cup matchup on Tuesday night. Black was in stellar form, racking up 27 points during the first half, including an explosive 20 points in the second quarter alone. This performance allowed Orlando to set a franchise record for most points in a quarter (51) and half (86).
Competing without their main star, Paolo Banchero, sidelined with a groin injury, the Magic demonstrated remarkable depth and unity. A total of nine players reached double figures, with Franz Wagner contributing 21 points and Desmond Bane adding 15. Notably, the bench shone brightly, providing 82 points—the highest total for any team in the NBA this season. Black and Jett Howard were key contributors from the bench, with Howard contributing 13 points.
On the other side, the 76ers faced challenges due to the absence of several key players, including Joel Embiid and Paul George. Tyrese Maxey led Philadelphia with 20 points, while Jared McCain chipped in 15. Both teams were tied 35-35 at the end of the first quarter, but Orlando quickly shifted momentum in the second.
In just minutes, Orlando opened up a comfortable double-digit lead. Black scored seven points in rapid succession, hit a crucial 3-pointer, and then Jalen Suggs assisted him on an alley-oop from half court. Black followed that with two additional 3-pointers, both set up by Suggs, propelling Orlando to a 57-43 advantage. The Magic's lead expanded to 68-52 in the waning moments of the half, capped off by a 9-0 run with all points contributed by Wagner and Howard, entering halftime at a commanding 86-60.
Early in the third, Black's finger roll extended the lead to over 30 points, and the Magic launched a 17-0 run, with Tristan da Silva sinking a 3-pointer to elevate the score to 111-69. Maintaining control, Orlando displayed remarkable shooting accuracy, teamwork, and defensive prowess throughout the quarter.
The final quarter saw the Magic's dominance persist, with their lead ballooning to as much as 46 points. While Black's standout performance garnered attention, it was the collective effort—from bench contributions to defensive plays—that sealed the victory.
An altercation in the second quarter resulted in six technical fouls, with Suggs facing a double-technical, leading to his ejection. Despite this, Suggs posted an impressive 11 assists in just 16 minutes.
Black’s scoring prowess, combined with the team's depth and strategic play, underscored Orlando's strong showing, especially given the absence of Philadelphia's star players. This commanding victory, bolstered by record-setting performances, serves to enhance their confidence moving forward in the season.
