In light of escalating wildfires that are advancing towards Bordeaux, French President Emmanuel Macron convenes a crisis cabinet meeting on Monday.
Current reports indicate that the inferno is now just 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the city, as stated by Mayor Thomas Cazenave. While evacuation plans for the city’s 850,000 residents remain unactivated for now, authorities are on heightened alert.
Additional complications loom as forecasts predict another heatwave in France, potentially bringing temperatures to 40°C in certain regions starting Tuesday.
Over the past week, wildfires have wreaked havoc across Europe, with France and Spain suffering the most. To date, over 330,000 individuals have been evacuated across these countries.
On Saturday, President Macron assured the French that the government will support affected towns and communities in the recovery process, committing to remain present “for as long as necessary.”
In the vicinity of Bordeaux, tens of thousands have left their homes, with the situation described as “very unfavourable” by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, as the fire unpredictably encroaches on the urban area.
The biggest wildfire currently raging in the Gironde region has created a rare phenomenon known as a “pyrocumulonimbus” cloud—a massive, fire-induced thunderstorm that is sustained by its own winds and lightning, according to the National Firefighters Federation of France (FNSPF).
Eric Brocardi, a spokesperson for FNSPF, remarked on the significant challenges faced by firefighters. “The unpredictable fire front hampers direct efforts to combat the blaze,” he stated.
He characterized the battle as a “David-versus-Goliath scenario,” warning that only heavy rainfall over three days or a strategic redirection of the flames could lead to any semblance of control.
These wildfires have extensively devastated large swathes of France, burning approximately 42,000 hectares—marking it as one of the most significant forest fires since World War Two. This year alone, close to 98,000 hectares have been scorched throughout the nation.
Emergency services have evacuated over 220,000 people in south-west France as containment operations are undertaken.
The situation in Spain is not much better, as new wildfires spread rapidly.
Firefighters have been hard at work battling blazes near Valencia, forcing around 15,000 residents to evacuate their homes.
Pilar Bernabe, the delegate of the Spanish central government to Valencia, described the fire's intensity and cautioned that adverse weather conditions are on the horizon.
Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska indicated that while the fires’ spread is slow, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez warned in a recent visit to Ávila that “difficult hours are ahead.”
In a display of solidarity, King Felipe VI of Spain visited an emergency shelter in Villamanta, located south-west of Madrid, noting that the wildfires have led to “incalculable” harm to the nation's natural resources.
According to Spain's Minister for Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, wildfires have affected about 77,000 hectares nationwide, with the fire in Ávila emerging as one of the largest in recent history.
Among the evacuees was Olga Congacha, 50, who left her village of Robledo de Chavela, just west of Madrid.
“I was overwhelmed with panic,” she reflected on her forced evacuation. “You don’t even know how to react at that moment—it’s a truly awful feeling.”
Having briefly returned to collect medication, she found her home streets empty and her house blanketed in ash.
Authorities revealed that shifting winds are currently pushing the fires away from Madrid, although evacuation orders remain in place for additional villages as wildfires persist.
Thus far, more than 90,000 individuals have been evacuated from areas surrounding Madrid and Ávila.
