Audiences eager for a return to the franchise have reason to celebrate: Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, the leading pair from the 1999 hit The Mummy, are confirmed to appear in The Mummy 4. The new instalment will be steered by directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for Ready or Not (2019) and their 2022 revival of the Scream series.
The 1999 reboot featured Fraser as a bold treasure hunter in 1930s Egypt who teams up with archaeologist Weisz to confront a vengeful, supernatural priest. The film was a box-office success that established both actors as major Hollywood draws. They returned for The Mummy Returns (2001), though Weisz did not participate in the franchise’s third entry, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008).
Universal later attempted to relaunch the series with Tom Cruise in 2017, but that reboot failed to meet expectations and effectively shelved the studio’s broader Dark Universe ambitions.
Fraser has experienced a notable comeback, earning an Oscar for his performance in The Whale (2022) and appearing in projects such as No Sudden Move (2021), Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, and Brothers. He also featured in the Japanese film Rental Family, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Weisz has maintained a distinguished career since The Mummy, with an Academy Award for The Constant Gardener and a BAFTA for The Favourite to her name. Her recent credits include Melina Vostokoff in Marvel’s Black Widow and a leading role in the Amazon series Dead Ringers (2023).
With Fraser and Weisz back on board, The Mummy 4 represents a long-awaited reunion of the franchise’s original stars and promises to revisit the adventurous tone that captivated audiences more than two decades ago.
