British Columbia declared a state of emergency on Saturday, August 8, 2026, as the fast-moving Bald Range wildfire rapidly expanded in the southern interior of the western Canadian province.
The fire grew to about 9,500 hectares (23,500 acres) after nearly doubling in size overnight. Authorities issued evacuation orders in Summerland, Peachland and other districts west of Okanagan Lake, forcing thousands of residents to leave their homes.
The affected region is known for its wine production and accounts for most of British Columbia’s wine industry. It is also Canada’s second-largest wine-producing area.
The Bald Range wildfire was reported to be burning out of control as crews faced rapidly changing and dangerous conditions.
British Columbia Premier David Eby said at a news conference on Saturday that a fire official had compared the intensity of the blaze to “a bomb going off.”
According to Eby, the official described flames reaching about 100 feet up trees, with flames extending another 200 feet above them. The fire was also generating its own weather system, producing lightning that could further contribute to the blaze.
Eby said homes had been lost and properties destroyed. He added that some people became trapped when conditions changed suddenly and had to be rescued.
The premier described the situation as highly dynamic and threatening.
Officials said the Bald Range wildfire had triggered the largest evacuation event in British Columbia so far this summer.
More than 20,000 people across the province have been forced to leave their homes because of wildfires.
Summerland has a population of around 12,000, based on the 2021 census, while Peachland has about 6,500 residents.
Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes said many farms had been affected, while authorities were still assessing the number of structures that may have been destroyed.
“We have to brace ourselves for the worst,” Holmes said in a phone interview from Penticton.
Many residents began leaving their homes overnight as the fire moved rapidly.
People from Summerland drove south toward Penticton or north toward Kelowna before highways in the area started closing.
Summerland resident Terry Fries said he was watching a football game on Friday night when a neighbour warned him to prepare a bag because the fire was getting closer.
When authorities issued the evacuation order at around midnight, Fries and his family drove approximately 45 kilometres (28 miles) north to Kelowna.
Residents also recorded videos showing fires near highways and structures burning as people evacuated the affected areas.
By Saturday afternoon, ash had begun settling on vehicles and houses in nearby communities, while the wildfire turned the skies orange.
Summerland lost electricity on Saturday as the wildfire continued to affect the area.
The municipality also issued a boil-water notice after untreated water entered the water system.
According to the municipality, untreated water entered the system after water bypassed the treatment plant because of the wildfire.
British Columbia was facing widespread wildfire activity as hot and dry conditions increased the risk of fires spreading.
Around 1,500 firefighting personnel were battling more than 100 fires across the province.
British Columbia had issued 40 evacuation orders and 49 evacuation alerts.
Other Canadian provinces, including Ontario and Quebec, have also faced wildfires this year as hot and dry weather contributed to fires in densely forested areas.
Firefighters from Mexico, Australia, France and New Zealand have assisted with firefighting efforts in Canada.
According to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre, wildfires have burned approximately 4 million hectares (9.9 million acres) across Canada this year.
The continuing fire activity has placed additional pressure on firefighting resources as crews work to contain blazes and protect communities affected by evacuations.
