Shedeur Sanders is off to a promising start in his NFL journey with the Cleveland Browns. The rookie quarterback made history by being the first Browns rookie to win his debut in 30 years. Now, he is set to take the field again this week, following Coach Kevin Stefanski's confirmation that he will start for the second consecutive game after guiding the Browns to a solid 24-10 win against the Las Vegas Raiders.
Stefanski commended Sanders for maintaining composure amid challenges — a key trait for any quarterback. He emphasized that young quarterbacks develop game by game, and Sanders is clearly exhibiting improvement. After encountering difficulties in his debut against the Baltimore Ravens, Sanders returned with more control and assurance, completing 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Notably, this performance marked one of the few instances this season where a Browns quarterback surpassed the 200-yard mark, indicating progress in their offense.
Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees crafted a game plan that helped Sanders find his rhythm. Many plays featured short passes, with thirteen throws aimed less than 10 yards downfield. However, the Browns were unafraid to attempt deeper throws when timed well. Sanders successfully executed two deep passes for a cumulative 91 yards, including a pivotal 52-yard throw to Isaiah Bond in the first quarter. Bond managed to break away from his defender, and Sanders delivered the ball splendidly even under pressure. This remarkable play, along with a 66-yard touchdown screen pass to Dylan Sampson, highlighted two of the Browns' longest passes this season.
An encouraging indicator for Cleveland was Sanders’ calmness under duress. Despite earlier struggles with avoiding sacks, he effectively maneuvered against the Raiders, getting sacked only once amidst eight pressure situations. Stefanski noted satisfaction with how Sanders controlled the game's tempo and managed the offense. While some issues need to be addressed, the coaching staff feels confident that Sanders has the mindset necessary for continued improvement.
On the defensive front, the Browns continue to excel. Their pass rush was remarkable, bringing down Raiders quarterback Geno Smith ten times, marking the second-highest total in the team's history. Defensive standout Myles Garrett contributed three sacks to his season tally, now holding the team record with 18 sacks — the most for any player in the initial 11 games since the NFL began tracking sacks in 1982. He also set a league record by achieving 14 sacks in just five games.
However, not everything is positive for Cleveland. Their third-down conversion remains dismal, finishing 3-for-12 against the Raiders after struggling with 2-for-14 against the Ravens. Running back Jerome Ford continues to face challenges, not contributing positively, and injuries to DT Adin Huntington and TE Brenden Bates mean they will be out for the foreseeable future.
Nevertheless, the Browns ended a 13-game road losing streak, claiming a victory away from home. With a home record of 2-3, they are gearing up for their next match against the San Francisco 49ers, a team they have historically excelled against at home, winning eight of the last ten encounters.
With Sanders making strides, a solid defense in place, and a newfound sense of confidence, the Browns are eager to secure back-to-back victories for the first time in two years. The team is optimistic that Sanders can continue to progress and lead them forward.
