On Tuesday night in Provo, Utah, the BYU Cougars displayed remarkable resilience by overcoming a challenging first half to secure an 85-68 victory against the Delaware Blue Hens. The seventh-ranked Cougars, remaining unbeaten this season, rallied in the second half, powered by standout scores of 26 points each from Robert Wright III and Richie Saunders, marking their third consecutive win.
Wright nearly registered a triple-double with 26 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists, showcasing his leadership as he orchestrated the game in the second half. Meanwhile, Saunders enthused the home crowd with his dynamic contributions, posting 26 points and 10 rebounds while netting six three-pointers that changed the game’s tempo.
AJ Dybantsa also made a significant impact, adding 18 points and seven rebounds, bolstering the Cougars' inside game. His energetic plays under the rim during crucial moments helped shift the momentum, particularly with consecutive dunks that electrified the fans.
Domination in rebounding proved vital, as BYU outmuscled Delaware for a 46-25 advantage on the boards. Securing 19 offensive rebounds translated into 23 essential second-chance points, significantly hampering Delaware’s ability to maintain their lead.
Delaware started strong, surprising BYU with an early 17-4 lead. Both Christian Bliss and Macon Emory shined with 18 points each to guide the Blue Hens through the first half. However, as the game progressed, BYU’s resilience began to show following halftime.
The first half was difficult for BYU as they missed their initial 11 attempts from beyond the arc, managing only one successful three-pointer before halftime. Despite this, they stayed close, trailing just 37-34 at the break.
In stark contrast, the second half saw BYU find their shooting form, sinking 11 out of 20 from three-point territory. A significant moment arrived when Wright and Saunders' consecutive threes flipped the score, giving BYU a lead at 51-48 that they maintained throughout.
Saunders particularly shone, hitting three straight threes during a pivotal 20-5 run that expanded BYU's lead to 73-57. His clutch shooting and timely rebounds thwarted any Delaware resurgence in the game's closing moments.
This victory advances BYU to 3-0 this season, reaffirming their status as one of college basketball's elite teams. Meanwhile, Delaware, falling to 0-3, must regroup as they navigate the remainder of their schedule.
