Calgary Experiences Windstorm Havoc as Gusts Reach 90 km/h

Calgary Experiences Windstorm Havoc as Gusts Reach 90 km/h

Post by : Shweta

On Friday, a powerful windstorm hit Calgary, prompting Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue a warning about intense winds. Gusts reached speeds of 90 km/h, resulting in significant disruptions and damages throughout the area.

Emergency calls surged, with city officials reporting an increase in incidents related to fallen trees and branches. Early reports noted about six incidents overnight, which rapidly escalated to approximately 30 by morning. Crews were dispatched across the city to clear roads and ensure public safety due to debris blocking various streets.

The storm also resulted in downed power lines, creating dangerous situations in certain neighborhoods. Utility company ENMAX has cautioned citizens to keep a safe distance from any fallen or damaged lines, highlighting that electricity can transfer through objects in contact. People are urged to report such threats immediately.

In residential areas, notable property damage was recorded. In Rundle, a portion of a roof was torn off, and in another part of the city, a large sign fell onto a parked vehicle. The impact of flying debris from branches and unsecured items further increased risks.

Several unusual incidents occurred, including a trampoline being lifted away by the winds, illustrating the storm's severity and the hazards imposed by inadequately secured outdoor objects.

City officials are advising residents to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and secure loose items on their property. They also caution against attempting to clear branches or trees that touch power lines due to electrocution risks.

Insurance professionals state that typical home insurance policies generally cover damages caused by wind, including injuries from flying debris or fallen trees, while vehicle coverage depends on specific policies.

Weather forecasts indicate that wind conditions should gradually improve overnight, providing some relief to residents, although safety measures continue as crews address issues throughout Calgary.
