Cambodia Court Upholds Journalists' Treason Convictions

Cambodia Court Upholds Journalists' Treason Convictions

Post by : Shakul

Cambodia's Supreme Court has upheld the treason convictions and 14-year prison sentences of two journalists accused of sharing sensitive photographs related to last year's border clashes with Thailand. The ruling ends the latest appeal by Phorn Sopheap and Pheap Pheara, who have maintained that they were carrying out legitimate journalistic work.

The decision has renewed international concern about press freedom and judicial independence in Cambodia.

Case Linked to Border Conflict

The two journalists were arrested in July 2025 after returning from reporting near the Cambodia-Thailand border. Authorities accused them of posting photographs taken inside a restricted military area on Facebook, claiming the images contained information harmful to national defence.

The journalists denied the allegations, saying they had permission to enter the area while covering the border situation.

Government Defends Court Decision

Cambodia's Information Ministry defended the Supreme Court's ruling, stating that the judiciary had acted independently and according to national law. Officials said freedom of expression remains protected in Cambodia but stressed that journalists must also respect national security regulations.

The government argued that media freedom does not exempt individuals from criminal responsibility.

Rights Groups Raise Fresh Concerns

Human rights organisations strongly criticised the ruling, describing the sentences as excessive and harmful to independent journalism. Rights advocates argued that any dispute involving journalists should have been handled under Cambodia's Press Law rather than criminal provisions carrying lengthy prison terms.

Media groups said the verdict could discourage independent reporting on sensitive national issues.

Border Dispute Remains Sensitive

The photographs were linked to military tensions between Cambodia and Thailand during last year's border clashes. One widely shared image showing land mines was later used in reports that fuelled disagreements between both countries over responsibility for the conflict.

Although fighting ended following a ceasefire in December, diplomatic tensions between the neighbouring countries remain.

Press Freedom Debate Continues

Cambodia continues to face criticism from international organisations over restrictions on media and political opposition. The latest court decision has again placed the country's human rights record under global scrutiny, with campaigners urging authorities to strengthen protections for independent journalism.

Observers say the case could have lasting implications for press freedom and media operations in Cambodia.
